Beijing by bike (1999) * Two lads and one idea: to break the(ir) 10.000 km limit. But where to cycle without having to take a boat or an airplane ? Beijing perhaps? Sounded cool. It was cool: 14.400 km in 120 days. Every meter on our own force – every day. This was my “where-are-my-limits-tour” par excellence. A exhilarating voyage through eleven countries, such as Turkey, Iran, Kyrgyzstan and China After 28.000 km since I got my first MTB 1996 I wanted to do make a real huge, intercontinental bike trip with a friend Michael Giefer. This was possible after finishing sec, school in 1999. Since 1998 both of us were planning the tour, Michael did Visa and country-specific planing and I did sponsoring and material organisation. We had everything done when we met near Frankfurt on July 1st in order to bike to Beijing. The first night we had our tents at a farmer not far away from my birthplace. When I told him where we wanted to go to he laughed at us, give us 5 deutschmarks and said „Send me a picture postcard when you arrive in Beijing, harr harr harr!“ And so we did.
